Foster Grandparent Program
Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development (COAD) sponsors the Foster Grandparent Program with federal funding from AmeriCorps Seniors and state and local agencies. Our program recruits individuals, aged 55 and over, to volunteer in classrooms in their community. We provide training and the cost of a background check to be eligible for volunteering in public schools and day care centers. Additionally, volunteers must meet income guidelines. Households of 1 the maximum is $31,300 annually and households of 2 annual maximum is $42,300. This is a requirement for AmeriCorps for volunteers to receive a non-taxable stipend. They also receive mileage reimbursements and paid time off. The stipend does not impact any assistance the individual may receive. It is not counted as income.
Our program offers eligible individuals an opportunity to help in their community and stay active. There’s excitement being involved with the youth and sharing your experience and knowledge.
A couple things volunteers need to do is smile, give high-fives and share words of encouragement to young children.
